Penn 2014 Directions

To the University of Pennsylvania Campus:

For detailed directions of how to get to the Penn Campus and the Mathematics Department, please consult the Math Department Directions Webpage.

The Mathematics Department is located in the David Rittenhouse Laboratory (DRL) which is at the corner of 33rd and Walnut streets. If you are coming from Center City, e.g. from the Hotel, you have several options:

Take the SEPTA city buses 21 or 42 that run along Walnut street. There are bus stops on every corner and the buses run in 10min-20min intervals depending on the time of the day. Get off at the corner of Walnut street and 33rd street. The bus ride takes about 10 minutes.

Go to the subway station on the corner of 15th and Market streets and take the Market-Frankford subway line, westbound. Get off at the 34th street stop and walk to DRL. The subway ride takes about 5 minutes.

Go to the subway station on the corner of 15th and Market streets and take any of the westbound trolley (green) lines. You can use any of the lines 10, 11, 13, 34, or 36. Get off at the 33rd street stop and walk to DRL. The trolley ride takes 5-8 minutes.

Walk along Walnut street, westbound, until you reach 33rd street. The distance from Broad steet to 33rd street is about 1.6 mile. Walking takes about 30 minutes.

The SEPTA fare for the bus, subway or trolley ride is $2.25 payable in cash on boarding. You can also purchase SEPTA tokens (in packs of 2, 5, or 10) at the main subway station at the corner of 15th and Market streets. Each token can be used for one fare on SEPTA buses, subway or trolleys and costs $1.80. If you are paying in cash on boarding, exact change is required.

If you are driving directly to Penn: you can park at the Palestra lot. The Palestra lot is accessed by turning right on 32nd Street from Chestnut Street. To access the lot follow 32nd street to the end, continue straight under the Walnut Street bridge on Chancellor Street, and park in any of the parking slots behind the Palestra building. Pay at the automatic kiosk station and display the payment stub on your dashboard. The flat daily parking cost is $12. Another option is to park at a street meter on 33rd street or Walnut street along the sidewalk of the DRL building. Again you have to pay at an automatic kiosk station and display the payment stub on your dashboard.

If you are coming to Penn from the airport:

  • A train leaves the airport every half hour. You should exit the train at the University City Rail Station near 32nd St and South St (= Spruce St.). The fare is $8.00 payable in cash on board and the ride takes about 15 minutes. From the station you can walk behind the Penn Stadium, follow the path in front of the Palestra building, and enter DRL.

  • A metered taxi ride from the airport generally costs about $30 including tip and takes about 15 minutes. All taxis offer a $25 Flat Rate from the Airport to the Central Philadelphia Area including the Penn Campus.

If you are going to the Holiday Inn Express from the airport:

  • A train leaves the airport every half hour. You should exit the train at the Jefferson (formerly Market East) Rail Station at the corner of 12 Street and Filbert Street. The fare is $8.00 payable in cash on board and the ride takes about 25 minutes. Upon exiting the station walk half a block west along Filbert Street, or along Market Street, (the train travels East, so you'll be walking back the way you came) until you reach the intersection with 13th Street. Turn left on 13th Street and walk two blocks South until you reach Walnut Street. Turn right on Walnut and you will be at the hotel.
